Summer - Slackin' or Succeedin'

Lazy Crazy Summer Days

What are your plans for the summer? When we first starting discussing all the things we weren't going to be doing this summer around Harmony Bible Church, I was a stoked. Great, I thought! More time with the family and friends. I'll get to know my neighbors and have time for hobbies again.

Then the calendar started to fill. I realized I'd be teaching a Monday/Wednesday class through June. That's one third of the summer. And then two weeks in Kosova, that's another sixth. Add up time on vacation with family and days spent working on projects like putting in a family room in our basement and whoosh, there goes another sixth of the summer. I've got 4 weeks left - one third!!! Where did all the time go?

I find living as a disciple of Jesus Christ my biggest source of peace. But it's a balancing act - life in tension. Like the tension between 2 Timothy 2:4 "No one serving at as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs - he wants to please his commanding officer." and Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in all the earth." I can't sit and relax like a civilian when I know I'm a soldier in the battle. Yet I'm supposed to relax and be still trusting God will be exalted among the nation. Which is it battle & fight or relax & trust?

So when I think of my summer and the hope I have for crazy moments in a pool with my family and the hope I have to see people inspired to be more like Jesus, I realize there is tension. That's why I love the photo above - the beach chair, empty, with a copy of "Magnetic Materials" lying next to it, in progress, being read. Tough stuff and an ocean. Both/and.

So may you take on something huge this summer! And may you find time to put it down and splash in the water!
